In Chapter 2 of China Inside Out, written by Bill Dodson, he
outlines four major stresses for the citizens. They are housing costs,
educational costs, job competition, and health care expenses. I feel as if it
all stems from the initial challenge of going to a university. In the chapter
Dodson describes the challenges of students to become accepted into
universities and the fact that there is so much stress on getting in, that
people go to such great lengths to cheat. Especially now that university costs are
becoming higher the people who live in the more rural areas are finding it more
difficult to gain entrance to university because they do not have the same
education as those in the cities. By not going to university, these students
are not offered as great of jobs, they do not make enough money to afford
housing and overall their price to live skyrockets. I find this to be only
somewhat similar to what we are facing because in America we have a lot more
options when it comes to college. However, I do believe that we as Americans do
face a lot of the same stresses, maybe just not to the same extent of the Chinese.
I feel that China and America face the same issues but they deal with them in
different ways. Overall, China I feel needs to figure out a better system to
handle all of these stresses especially since their population is supposed to
grow to an even larger number in the upcoming years.
