Behind the Beautiful Forevers: 50-75

While reading about Manju, I found myself really liking her: almost idolizing her at points. The characteristics she entails are extremely hardworking, intelligent, respectful, and caring. Manju seems like one of the only people in Annawadi who hasn't lost her sanity. I idolize her because she is going through a rough time in her life with a mother who doesn't agree with her character, college, a job on the side, and a household to run. Yet, she continues to accomplish all of these things without letting the stress get to her or affect her personality. She is very selfless as well: giving a lot of her time and effort into her students. On page 62, it is expressed that most hut-school teachers only conduct school when supervisors came. However, Manju continued to teach even when these supervisors weren't around because she cared for the students and their eduction. In a way, she reminds me of my mother. My mom tries her hardest to run our household, work a full time and part time job, and continue a college workload: all with a smile on her face and love in her heart. Manju and my mom both have that unrealistic motivation to accomplish everything on their plate without sacrificing character. However, Manju will allow people to take advantage of that. Her mother pushes her around and is constantly overbearing. My mother won't always put up with that from other people. Our family knows she is in charge and we understand the stress that she is under, so we won't take advantage of that. However, if someone does, my mom will put them in their place. Whereas, Manju doesn't quite have that backbone quite yet.
