What is your reaction to Manju? Does she remind you of anyone you know? How is she like and unlike that person? What are the principal characteristics of her
identity?
My reaction to Manju was that she was very thorough in what
she wanted to accomplish. She had this eagerness about herself that you don’t
really see in most of the characters in the book. Manju is very strong and
talented and deals very well with the obstacles she’s put up against. She goes
against her mother completely by being in school, having a job, and just acting
differently from her mother. Manju reminds me of one of my longtime friends;
Corinne, Corinne like Manju is not approved by her mother in anything that she
does. Corinne tries so hard to become the person she wants to be in the world
and all her mother wants to do is tear her down. Corinne has been through so
much the last 18 years and it’s incredible to see what they go through in life.
Corinne is strong, noble, friendly, helpful, and just all around a caring
person, she loves animals to death and is at Purdue University doing what she
loves. Manju and Corinne are so alike it’s scary to think about, the two of
them show how strong they can be through tough obstacles even when their odds
are against them they pull through and end up doing what they love the most.
