Chapter 3 & 4

The property transfers, as explained in chapter 3, occur without a warning and all of the time.  Dodson explained how sometimes the backhoes would appear at a village or residence and it would be torn down, because the landlord had sold the land, but did not tell any of the tenants.  The land would then be used to create more business or residential areas for the different hukou of the area.  There was a constant talk about the hukou, as I understood were almost like classes, the urban hukou and the country hukou.  It was almost an insult to be considered of the country if the person actually was from the city.  This seems to be a really shady way of doing business, but the landlords are paid a small fortune.  It makes them richer, while hurting other people that aren’t them.  Dodson explained also how he was being offered some of the lands for a very cheap price.  I wonder if the Chinese do that to many of the foreign people?  People with bad morals could take up the offer and profit off of others that they would not necessarily have to have contact with.

“Local governments and polluting businesses have become increasingly sophisticated in the ways in which they convince residents of the necessity and efficacy of the toxins their factories produce.”  Why would any company or people try to make others think that being sick is a necessity of having a prosperous place of employment near them?  This seems completely ridiculous, especially since the government is in on the scheme of making others sick.  This goes back to a previous chapter that explains the ever increasing rate of the health care system.  The example there was of a family that had money, but was destroyed by one individual that got sick.  Now, since the government convinces workers at factories that their diseases are results of mass hysteria or that they’re side effects of a job, it seems to me that the government is purposely trying to get rid of the lower class country folks that flock to factories for employment.  The society is practically killing itself, but also has a huge population to back it up, and I’m sure the government knows that it has more than a couple extra million people available to be disposed.  The factories won’t see a reduction in employment anytime soon.
