I honestly find this entire chapter of Dodson to be very
compelling and interesting. I was aware of the one-child policy before this,
but I was not aware of the extent that people are affected by it. The story
Dodson tells at the beginning of the chapter is very upsetting to me. David, a
Chinese man wants him and his wife to move to Canada because they are expecting
their second child. David’s brother works for the government and made David and
his wife abort the child because of the policy. Because of this happening David
and his elder brother are now sworn enemies. This situation is just so sad and
upsetting, I cannot believe that they allow this to happen this way. The second
thing that I found most interesting was the fact that the generations who are
the only children are known as the “Little Emperors” or “Empresses.” These
children have been spoiled by their parents and grandparents and now that they
are adults the divorce rate is up, in cities like Beijing, because the spouses
do not understand how to handle living with one another. Not to mention that
they are not even really in love marriages, it is all just about money or
keeping the family name alive. This in relation to the policy that the United
States has is interesting. We do not have a one child rule and if we did, well
the world would be a lot different. I understand why China has the rule I just don’t
understand how they could enforce it so brutally.
