Bill Dodson has portrayed property transfer in China as
being very complicated. It is basically the government taking over the land
completely, leaving its citizens with nothing of their own. Corporations can
come in and they want to use the land for their own commercial use and the
government gives the land to the corporations even if there are people living
on it. Those citizens are then relocated to another area. Also citizens in the
rural areas are expected to help build up the cities, but then they don’t even
get to live in it. However, by 2030, Dodson writes that China wants most of its
people to be living in the cities because it is better for the economy, and to
make them a more powerful country. It surprises me that this is what China is
moving towards because although I think that countries need to develop I think
that it is sad that the government cares more about making money off of the
land than the people who are living on the land.

The most compelling piece of information related to
pollution in Dodson’s chapter 4 is the fact that there is such a lack of
hygiene and health care in the factories where many people work and make their
livings. One example of this is of the two teenagers that Dodson describes in
the beginning of the chapter. They work in an adhesives factory and the
conditions there are extremely poor. The workers do not take any precautions
and are all being exposed to all sorts of chemicals and poisons. They do not
wear any masks or gloves at all. Dodson, when walking through the factory immediately
felt sick because of the conditions. The lack of care and respect for the well
being of employees in China is disgraceful. I cannot believe that the
government allows such conditions to be present. The fact that this is not the
only problem with the country, pollution wise though should be a big warning
sign for the Chinese government. They need to start taking care of their
citizens and their environment. Children should not be getting lead poisoning,
carp should not be showing up dead, and teenagers should not be working in such
poor conditions.
China’s transferring of property and legalizing citizen’s land is a major issue in China. The government in China takes away land from the poor and gives it to the wealthy without even mentioning it of any sort to those who are less fortunate. When buying and selling land there should be some communication on both the buyer and the seller. This is a difficult topic to discuss because even though it is illegal it is still going on today. The citizens of China may have a home one day but then have it taken away the following day without any notice. The Chinese government is corrupted to allow a terrible thing like this to prolong this long.
